Showcase Learning with a Capstone Web Page (elementary)
Web pages created by 5th grade, 5th grade, 4th grade and 3rd grade students.
What did students create and share?
In this project, students created web pages to summarize their learning over the course of the year. Our goal was for their parents and other family members to be able to see what the students have learned over the school year, from their own perspectives.
Goals/Objectives
Students will be able to:
- Reflect on their learning in class over the school year
- Layout and design a webpage to reflect their understanding
- Add graphics to their webpage that enhances their presentation
Graphic creation and editing:
Students used Adobe Express to design their web pages.
Other tools:
Students used Chromebooks and iPads to complete this project. Each student was issued a Chromebook; each class had two iPads available for use.
Context and Classroom Rollout
What:
Students were assigned a capstone website project to represent their learning over the course of the year. I created a webpage to show students the basics of adobe web pages. I then gave them videos to follow and rewatch as needed. A lot of guided support was needed with my 3rd graders. The 5th graders needed almost no support.
Why:
Educators regularly use multiple approaches to accelerate learning, use enrichment options to extend and deepen learning opportunities and use current technologies to enhance performance in cognitive and affective areas. I wanted the students to be able to showcase their learning throughout the year and be able to share it with their parents and community members during our STEM night. Designing their own web pages seemed like an engaging and fun way for them to do that.
Project Outline
Step 1: Show a web page introduction to demonstrate what you can include with Adobe Express.
Step 2: Provide videos with more detail on how to make web pages.
Step 3: Provide additional support as needed.
All media creation was done in class.
Students took turns and helped each other take pictures for their projects. We have a classroom shared Google drive where they can upload media to make it easier to share ipad uploads. Students record videos outside of the classroom if they need a quiet environment.
These criteria were used to assess student work:
- Web Page design: Ensure you have a clean layout, make it easy to read, and that your graphics are logical for your topics.
- Content: Ensure you include both units of study and choose pictures that enhance the learning conducted in that unit. Include the driving question and explain your learning.
- Conventions: Ensure your webpage looks professional by having appropriate capitalization, punctuation, and spelling. Headings do not have to follow punctuation rules if it is a clear design choice.
